The Importance of Women's History Month

March is Women's History Month and a personal favorite month of ours. The National Women's History Project selects a theme and a group of historical figures as Honorees they will highlight in their events. Each year the theme is different, but the mission remains the same: highlight women's involvement and contribution to our history and the history of the world. the 2015 theme is Weaving the Story of Women's Lives. We love this topic, because women have such unique perspectives on history. Their stories are missing from our history textbooks, our class lectures, and our television programming. Half of the population and their experiences and contributions to our history are a blip in what we learn in our history. This month is dedicated to celebrating those stories that sometimes go unmentioned.

National Women's History Month Press Release

Here in the center we have three ways we will be celebrating this awesome month:

1) March 17th is our International Women's Day Celebration. The day actually falls on the 8th of March, right in the middle of Spring Break. People will be able to come to our center on that day, talk about a woman that inspires them, sign our poster and get a treat! We want to highlight to lives of women we encounter who left a mark on us.

2) March 23rd is our movie night. We will be showing the documentary Girl, Rising. It follows the lives of 9 girls internationally and weaves their stories together. It's a wonderful movie and everyone is invited to participate. It is 7pm in the SUU Theatre. Refreshments will be served.

3) March 16th -30th there will be posters highlighting founding women of SUU in honor of Founder's Week!  Stop by the Living Room windows in the Sharwan Smith and check them out.

We will also be starting the Clothesline Project during the last week of March to kick off Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Be looking out for that as well.

Have a good Spring Break T-Birds. We will see you on the 16th!
